Richard Gagnon may have titled this chart "Ballade Obligée" (Obligatory Ballad), but there's certainly nothing perfunctory or careless about this composition. A lovely tune written over a great set of chord changes, this chart puts the melodious sound of the trombone soloist front and centre. With lush harmonies and reasonable ranges for the ensemble throughout, this one could be played as written and recorded (with 1 chorus of melody and a half-chorus of blowing), opened up as desired, or even played without improvising.
